Make Your Swimwear Last Longer
You've found the perfect bikini — now let's make sure it stays looking amazing all season long. Swimwear takes a beating from saltwater, chlorine, sunscreen, and UV rays, but with the right care routine, your favorite pieces can last for years. Here's everything you need to know about caring for your swimwear.
Rinse After Every Wear
This is the single most important thing you can do for your swimwear. After every swim — whether in the ocean, pool, or hot tub — rinse your bikini or swimsuit thoroughly in cool, clean water. This removes chlorine, salt, sunscreen, and body oils that break down the fabric over time.
Tip: Rinse immediately after swimming, even if you plan to wash it properly later.
Hand Wash in Cold Water
Machine washing is the enemy of swimwear. The agitation and heat can stretch out elastic, fade colors, and damage delicate embellishments like rhinestones and ruffles. Instead, hand wash your swimwear in cool water with a small amount of gentle detergent or a dedicated swimwear wash.
How to hand wash:
- Fill a basin with cool water
- Add a small amount of gentle soap
- Gently squeeze the fabric — don't scrub or wring
- Rinse thoroughly until all soap is removed
Never Wring or Twist
Wringing out your swimwear stretches the fabric and elastic, causing it to lose its shape. Instead, gently press the water out by squeezing the fabric softly, then lay it flat or roll it in a clean towel to absorb excess moisture.
Dry in the Shade
Direct sunlight fades colors and degrades elastic over time — ironic, since swimwear is designed for sunny days! After washing, lay your swimwear flat in the shade or hang it in a well-ventilated area away from direct sun. Never put swimwear in the dryer.
Avoid Rough Surfaces
Sitting on rough concrete, textured pool edges, or abrasive surfaces can snag and pill your swimwear fabric. Use a towel to sit on whenever possible, especially with delicate styles featuring lace, mesh, or embellishments.
Be Careful with Sunscreen
Certain sunscreen ingredients — particularly those containing avobenzone — can cause orange or rust-colored stains on swimwear. Apply sunscreen and let it absorb fully before putting on your bikini. If you do get a stain, treat it immediately with a gentle stain remover before washing.
Store Properly
When the season ends, store your swimwear clean and dry in a cool, dark place. Avoid storing in plastic bags, which can trap moisture and cause mildew. A breathable fabric bag or drawer is ideal.
Caring for Embellished Swimwear
If you own rhinestone or jeweled swimwear (a Bikini Babee favorite!), take extra care:
- Hand wash only — never machine wash
- Avoid soaking for extended periods
- Pat dry gently around embellishments
- Store flat to prevent stones from catching on other fabrics
